Germany's anti-hate speech online NetzDG law enters into force

On October 1, 2017, the German Network Enforcement Act (Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz, or NetzDG) law, which was passed on June 30, 2017, entered into force. Under the law, social media platforms face fines up to 50 million euros if they fail to remove offensive posts within 24 hours. On September 30, 2017, it was reported that 50 employees of the German Federal Office of Justice had been tasked with supervising the implementation of the NetzDG law.
